Where did you get the idea for The Daughters?
Is it based on your own life?
Yes… and no. I did grow up in New York City, and my father has been on television since before I was born, and I did have to get my picture taken and attend events with my parents throughout the most painful, awkward periods of my teenage life. But I definitely do not know what it is like to grow up as the daughter of a supermodel, a business tycoon, or a pop star in 2011. So Lizzie, Carina, and Hudson are fully made-up characters. They’re going through stuff I would never know how to deal with. But at heart they’re really like any other fourteen year-old girls.
Which Daughter do you relate to the most?
All of them! But I’m probably the most similar to Lizzie, because of her insecurities and because she wants to be a writer.
Is The Daughters series being made into a movie or a TV show?
I certainly hope it will be one day. Though for now I still like being able to picture Lizzie, Carina, and Hudson exactly the way I want to.
How many books will there be in The Daughters series?
Four. The final book in the series, The Daughters Join the Party, will be out in November of 2011.
I want to be a writer, too. What advice can you give me?
Write! This is how you find your voice. It can take some time, and that’s OKAY. It took me a long time! Just try to write every day, and read everything you can, even if it’s a book you’re not sure you’ll like. Keep a journal. Get used to putting down your thoughts, observations, and feelings on paper. And always have a pen and paper handy in case you get a sudden, brilliant idea.
Are you going to write more books after The Daughters?
Definitely! In fact, I better get back to that right now….
